Software · Data · Infrastructure
Software systems, designed, built and kept running.
P34 Systems builds and maintains web applications, APIs, databases and Linux infrastructure, and takes on mapping and data analysis work. Clients deal directly with the engineer doing the work, from requirements through deployment and ongoing support. Based in Sydney, Australia and Santa Barbara, California, USA.
Services
From database design to deployment and ongoing support.
-
01
Full-stack web applications
Database-backed web applications in Ruby on Rails or Python and Flask, covering the data model, server-side logic, user interface, deployment and ongoing maintenance.
-
02
Linux system administration
Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), with extensive experience managing Debian- and Arch-based servers and desktops: setup, maintenance, security updates and troubleshooting.
-
03
Containerised systems
Applications and services packaged with Docker and run with Docker Compose, so deployments are reproducible and straightforward to update or move to a new host.
-
04
Database design & administration
Schema design, migrations, performance, and backup and recovery for PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB and SQLite, including moving data between them.
-
05
API design & development
Documented HTTP APIs in Go and Python, with authentication and rate limiting where the project needs them.
-
06
Custom developer tools
Command-line utilities, terminal interfaces and automation in Go and Python that take repetitive work out of development and operations.
-
07
Mapping & geographic data
Custom maps and the data pipelines behind them: processing GPS and other location data, route analysis, and self-hosted map tiles for web applications.
-
08
Data analysis & modelling
Data cleaning, analysis and statistical modelling in R and Python, delivered as reproducible reports, dashboards or production code.
Products
Platforms we build and run ourselves.
-
01
Marathon Swimmers Federation
The federation's website and member portal: memberships, news, podcast, event calendar, support tickets and a help-desk queue for staff.
-
02
MSF Documented Swims
A swim ratification platform: multi-step submissions with fees, magic-link attestations from observers, and peer review before publication. Cited by the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, whose citation calls its observer report template “a de facto standard for documenting self-organized solo marathon swims.”
-
03
LongSwims Database
Results, records and swimmer profiles for marathon and ultra-marathon swims, rebuilt from a curated master database by a reproducible R pipeline.
-
04
Live GPS tracking
Custom live tracking maps for open-water swims, ultramarathon runs and other endurance events, fed by SPOT, Garmin inReach, Traccar and AIS, with route progress and arrival-time prediction. Includes the leading live tracking site for English Channel swims. Custom mapping clients include New York Open Water, Swim Across the Sound, Boston Light Swim, Infinity Channel Swimming and the Export 100 ultrarun.
-
05
AISbox
A pay-as-you-go API for live AIS vessel positions: watch every vessel in an area or follow a single ship, with updates every 10 minutes and 24-hour track history.
About
A small practice, built on data work.
P34 Systems is a software engineering consultancy focused on relational data, predictive modelling, custom mapping, Linux tooling and containerised deployment. It is led by Evan Morrison, previously a quantitative analyst at Google in Mountain View, California, who holds an AB from Princeton and an MA from Stanford.
Evan co-founded the Marathon Swimmers Federation in 2012 and built its LongSwims Database, MSF Documented Swims and live tracking platform, work recognised by his 2022 induction into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame as an Honor Administrator. P34 Systems builds and runs those platforms today, along with the prediction service, map tiles and Linux host behind them.
- Relational data
- PostgreSQL behind a Rails member portal; a curated SQLite results database rebuilt by a reproducible R pipeline; DuckDB and dbt models of NSW property sales.
- Predictive modelling
- Arrival-time prediction for open-water swims, backtested against past English Channel, North Channel and Manhattan swims; a 33-year climatology of Florida Straits currents.
- Custom mapping
- A self-hosted Protomaps planet served from object storage, and protomapr, an R package that brings vector tiles to Leaflet maps.
- Linux tooling
- Go terminal tools for syncing repositories and managing tasks, a host monitoring dashboard, and udev rules that lock a machine down when an unknown USB device appears.
- Containerisation
- Services run under Docker Compose behind Caddy, share one PostgreSQL cluster, and are backed up nightly with Restic to Cloudflare R2.
